MSM Mission
The MIAMI Shoe Museum (MSM) is an umbrella institution dedicated to advancing the study and cultural understanding of footwear. Through its MSM Research Center, the organization leads research, digital archiving, and curatorial programming focused on footwear history, design, and innovation. THE SHOE VAULT serves as the custodial platform for the Luis Valenzuela footwear collection, preserving its historical and creative significance. Building on this foundation, MSM develops educational programs that translate research findings and collection-based knowledge into accessible learning experiences. Together, these entities support collaborations, pop-up experiences, and public engagement initiatives that explore footwear as a lens into culture, identity, and design evolution.

MSM Vision
To establish the MIAMI Shoe Museum as a global reference point for footwear research, preservation, and cultural dialogue. We envision a connected ecosystem where the MSM Research Center generates knowledge, THE SHOE VAULT safeguards the Luis Valenzuela footwear collection, and educational programs transform research into learning and engagement. Through collaborations and experiential formats, MSM extends its work beyond institutional boundaries, redefining how footwear is studied, taught, and experienced across disciplines and generations.

The MIAMI Shoe Museum (MSM) is an umbrella institution dedicated to the study, preservation, and cultural interpretation of footwear. Through an integrated ecosystem that includes research, collection stewardship, education, and public engagement, MSM explores footwear as a cultural artifact shaped by history, identity, technology, and design innovation.

Founded as a virtual platform in 2023 by artist, educator, and curator Luis Valenzuela, MSM emerged from his extensive footwear collection, initiated in 2010. His interdisciplinary background in fashion, art, and education has shaped the development of a significant private collection of over 1,200 shoes and related objects, serving as a key resource for research and cultural study.

Today, the MIAMI Shoe Museum operates through two core platforms: the MSM Research Center and THE SHOE VAULT. The MSM Research Center leads research, digital archiving, curatorial development, and educational programming. THE SHOE VAULT serves as the custodial platform for the Luis Valenzuela footwear collection, ensuring its preservation, documentation, and long-term cultural significance.

Together, these entities support educational initiatives that translate research and collection-based knowledge into accessible learning experiences, as well as collaborations and pop-up activations that extend MSM’s presence into diverse contexts.

MSM has already activated its mission and vision through a series of exhibitions, curated presentations, and pop-up experiences, bringing footwear narratives into public and unexpected spaces while expanding access to its research and collection-based content.

The collection reflects the evolution of footwear across centuries, from anonymous pre-nineteenth-century craftsmanship to twentieth-century design icons and contemporary innovation. It includes works by André Perugia, Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier, Vivienne Westwood, Beth and Herbert Levine, Manolo Blahnik, Charles Jourdan, Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga, among others.

MSM also highlights the evolution of sneaker culture as a defining force in modern footwear history. Technological advances in materials and construction, such as plastics, zippers, Velcro, reinforced heels, and advanced synthetic fibers, have transformed both function and aesthetics, reshaping how footwear is designed, produced, and understood.

Across its collection, research, and public programming, the MIAMI Shoe Museum positions footwear as a lens through which to examine cultural change, technological progress, and creative expression across time.
